Walking Tour of Machpelah Cemetery
May 14, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm
“A Tour of Machpelah Cemetery”
We’re excited to return to our annual tour series and offer early access registration for HCGHS members to attend in-person. For one week, you can register for one of the 30 spots to attend the event, after which they will open up to the general public on April 24, 2022. For those who do not want or plan to attend in-person, our usual Zoom registration is also available to attend a live stream of the tour.
ABOUT THE TOUR
Part of a North Bergen “triad” of adjacent cemeteries (Machpelah, Hoboken and Flower Hill), the land at Machpelah Cemetery was first used for burial purposes in 1850. The cemetery was officially opened in 1853, by the Third Reformed Presbyterian Church Society of New York, though some sources suggest it later became a strictly Jewish cemetery, though that is not the case today.
Ron Skokandich, a North Bergen historian will give some background on what Machpelah and its immediate environs was like before it was a cemetery. HCGHS Vice President Patrick Cullen will speak about the process of uncovering the 300 plus veterans markers in the Freeholders Veterans Plot. Plus, we’ll visit the grave locations of some of the cemetery’s famous, not-so-famous, and (maybe) infamous residents to learn more about them.
