From his cavernous voice and unparalleled artistry to his fearless struggle for human rights, Paul Robeson was one of the twentieth century’s greatest icons and polymaths, with enduring cultural resonances in popular culture and politics. Drawn from her recent book, Everything Man, this talk announces “antiphonal life” as a uniquely conceived strategy of the polymath movement artist Paul Robeson. His ascension in scale, from raw element to mountain peak, reveals the failures of the suppressive state and the achievements of The People in their demand to hear and be heard.
Shana L. Redmond (she|her) is a public-facing scholar and the author of Anthem: Social Movements and the Sound of Solidarity in the African Diaspora (NYU Press, 2014) and Everything Man: The Form and Function of Paul Robeson (Duke UP, 2020), which was named one of NPR’s Best Books of 2020. In 2019 she contributed the critical liner essay for the vinyl soundtrack release to Jordan Peele’s film Us (Waxwork Records). She is professor of Musicology and African American Studies at UCLA.
