Jersey City Writers | A Crash Course in Characters
April 17, 2021 @ 1:00 pm
On Saturday, April 17 at 1:00 pm, the Jersey City Writers will hold a Crash Course in Characters. This three-hour webinar covers everything a fiction writer needs to know about creating, describing, and developing the element at the heart of every good story: characters.
This crash course aims to turn character development into the writer’s own adventure. JCW will cover topics as basic as defining the protagonist (not as simple as you might think) and more complex concepts such as:
- ● character voice versus writer voice
- ● side characters versus background characters
- ● antagonist versus villain
- ● character tags
- ● backstory, and more.
The course includes instruction and guided exercises, plus time to write, share, and workshop ideas. All prompts and exercises are designed to be useful for writers already working on a story, or seeking to start something new.
You can register for this crash course through the Jersey City Writers Meetup page, at https://www.meetup.com/The-Jersey-City-Writers-Meetup-Group/. Registration is $25. For more information, contact TheFullStory@jerseycitywriters.org.
This webinar is part of the JCW Full Story program, which allows writers to workshop full book-length manuscripts. In 2019, the Crash Courses were added to take writers through each of the major steps of planning, composing, editing, shopping, and publishing a book-length manuscript, with emphasis on fiction.
The character course is hosted by JCW Secretary Sara Stone. Stone has been working with JCW for three years and has been a member for seven years. With an MA in English from the City College of New York, Stone has a passion for all things writing.
