Community Lunch with Amanda Gentry and Yasmin Spiro
May 7, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Community lunch is an ongoing tradition at Mana Contemporary Chicago, where artists convene weekly to catch up, meet new people, and exchange ideas over lunch. Join us in this virtual lunch series where Chicago community director, Sarah Khalid Dhobhany, introduces two members from the Mana Contemporary community in conversation about what they’re doing and creating during this time.
This week, artists Amanda Gentry and Yasmin Spiro join us for lunch.
Amanda Gentry is a Chicago-based sculptor working in clay. Her work is the result of dedication to form, material, and process, driven by a determination to reveal what is essential. Gentry is a DCASE and IACA grant recipient whose work is in private collections and exhibited in galleries, academic institutions, and museums nationwide. She holds a BFA in design with a minor in sculpture from Boston University.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Chicago-based Yasmin Spiro’s interdisciplinary work explores cultural identity and socio-economic issues within the framework of urban development and social politics, through the lens of Caribbean culture. Spiro’s practice often situates the female body as a navigator of geographies and their politics. Her work has been shown internationally, and she is a founding member of the tART women’s collective. She holds a BFA and MFA from Pratt Institute.
