The Struggle for Free Speech and Public Assembly: A Fresh Look at Hague V. CIO – Friday 9/25 at 3PM

FreeIn 1937, Jersey City Mayor Frank Hague used a city ordinance, enforced firmly with the power of the police, to deny labor activists of the CIO the right to rally and distribute literature. The CIO and ACLU successfully challenged the ordinance, all the way to the Supreme Court. This marked a turning point both in the career of “Boss” Hague and in the judicial interpretation of civil rights under the First and Fourteenth Amendments.
This Friday, Sept. 25, 2020 at 3PM, historian Donald W. Rogers visits (virtually) with the Jersey City Free Public Library to discuss his new book, Workers Against the City: The Fight for Free Speech in Hague V. CIO</a>.
Based on extensive archival research, this new contribution to legal and NJ studies examines the many historical threads of this case and the era in which it took place – and the implications for today in the ever-evolving relation of the people to their government in the use of public space.
