Whistler’s Venice
March 9, 2019 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Free
Celebrating the 140th anniversary of the creation and showing of Whistler’s Venice pastels, for the month of March The Living With Art Project and Casa Columbo will feature artist Jim Fischer’s reproductions, using original materials, of over 60 of these extraordinary works.
The featured pastels in this exhibition were originally created and exhibited by James McNeil Whistler in London in 1880. During his lifetime, Whistler was described by his contemporary and friend, Claude Monet, as “The greatest living artist in the west” and these pastels, when originally exhibited, were described by a critic as “artistic gems.” Since their first exhibition in 1880, the works have been scattered across the globe, many are now in poor condition and most are kept in environmentally controlled vaults, rarely shown in public. The reproduced pastels in this exhibition will bring all of these works together again for the first time since 1880 and in the pristine condition as originally shown.
