Hudson County has a long history of serving as the set for fabulous feature films. From classics like the iconic 1972 The Godfather to modern hits like 2019’s Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix, many a movie has been made here.
The first independent motion picture production company in the United States, The Centaur Film Company, opened right here in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1907. In 1909, the company added a West Coast production unit, the Nestor Film Company, which established the first permanent film studio in Hollywood, California, in 1911. In other words, if you’re a fan of Hollywood, you have Hudson County to thank for its success.

Tucked away on the Hackensack River in the southeastern tip of Kearny is 10 Basin Studios, a new 36,000 square-foot sound stage with another 10,000 feet of office space.

In 2021, the state’s largest film studio opened in Jersey City in a warehouse converted to a 70,000 square-foot stage space with three sound stages. The studio is large enough to host up to four major TV and film productions per year. Some notable productions that were filmed here include: Dumb Money (film), Murder at the End of the World (FX/Hulu series), American Horror Stories (FX/Hulu series), and the 2023 Pepsi Super Bowl commercial featuring Ben Stiller and Steve Martin 1 and 2
Bayonne
Bayonne’s Bergen Point will soon have a new neighbor, as the former Texaco property is currently being transformed into a 74-acre TV and movie studio complex. The 17-building studio campus will encompass an enormous 1.5 million square feet, and include soundstage buildings, flexible support and office spaces, and workshop and mill buildings to construct and store stage sets. Dubbed 1888 Studios, the name is a nod to the year that the year the motion picture camera was invented.
